Personality.

Sweet as cyanide, Lortel is, at age 17, a ruthless businesswoman whose focus is always on the next piece of gold she can earn. She’s also a mage, a powerful elementalist specializing in ice magic. Though frequently found wearing a smile on her face, Lortel is anything but kind. She is driven, ambitious, and cutthroat, willing to do whatever it takes to survive.

That said, she’s not devoid of positive qualities. Chipper, charismatic, intelligent, and extremely capable, Lortel is a charming and dangerous girl… who can be convinced that there are more things to life than just money.

background.

Lortel grew up in desperate poverty, doing anything and everything she had to in order to survive. Though it’s not clear, her parents were killed when she was still quite young and she was adopted by her father, Elte Kehelland, head of the Elte Company. He molded his daughter into a ruthless and manipulative businesswoman with a shrewd acumen for financial gain. She currently attends Silvenia Academy, the empire’s premier academy, ostensibly as a student in the magic department. Her true purpose there, however, is to do business dealings on behalf of Elte and manipulate the school to the company’s advantage. Lortel has schemed and plotted her way to success—wilder than she could have dreamed of, but also full of great pain. She stole Elte’s company out from under him, but in so doing was betrayed by the only person she trusted. It was the unconditional kindness of a boy that saved her then, and she’s been in love with him ever since.

physical changes. As a Merrow, Lortel sports an entirely new set of physical characteristics. With coloring following the patterning of the parrotfish ,she has dorsal fins running all the way up her arms, connecting her arms to her torso with a thin membrane flap, and running all the way down her legs where they end in a larger, prehensile ray that affords her great maneuverability in water. She also has pectoral fins sprouting from behind her ears. Visible lines for gills line each side of her neck. Her hands and feet both taper into soft, deep blue-green coloration, fingers and toes tapered but not sharp, hands slightly, but visibly, webbed. She is often cool to the touch. The spines of all her fins (visibly) and her all her veins (faintly) are bioluminescent, shifting between blue, green, magenta, and orange continuously.

abilities. She will have lost her powerful ice magic in exchange for the Merrow's abilities, focusing on two primary capabilities: control over water, and siren song. Siren song will come more easily to her; you can read more about it and find specific permissions, as well as an opt-in to be affected by her song/voice, here. Control over water will be more difficult and take her longer; she may eventually be able to use it in creative offensive and defensive capacities.

drawbacks.She will now dehydrate easily if away from water for too long; she'll always need to plan around being able to soak for a while at least once a day or risk the beginnings of painful desiccation. Given she's a girl already somewhat prone to obsession with those she loves and strongly cares for, the emotional feedback loop caused by her siren song will only make those impulses uncontrollably intense.

visual. Lortel is petite with deep red hair that she keeps in a loose side-pony or braid at basically all times. Her green eyes are sharp and canny, always looking into you instead of at you. Generally she can be found wearing her school uniform, which includes a blazer and skirt, though she augments it with a hood she frequently keeps pulled up. She’s pretty, too, and she knows it.

demeanor. Logical, pragmatic, sweet, cold, manipulative, bold, and utterly charming. She’s rarely found without a smile on her face, like she’s always up to something (or knows something you don’t—which she likely does.)

</lj-raw>physical changes. Minimal, for now. Lortel sports a bushy fox tail the same deep red as her hair, along with a lil pair of similarly-colored fox ears atop her head. Her eyes have a flat, animalic look and reflect/shine in the dark. Her hands end in fine claws, delicate, not over-long, but still sharp. She projects a strange, dreamy, lightly floral perfume wherever she goes. It is not overwhelming, but it is also impossible not to notice.

abilities. She will have lost her powerful ice magic in exchange for the Trickster’s many abilities. Mimicry will be her primary ability, the one she exercises the most, and will rigorously work to mimic anyone, everyone, and any/everything around her for the purposes of deception. Her ability to phase/vanish will be harder for her, and weaker.

drawbacks. She is bound to lose her grip on her own identity eventually, and may spiral into existential panic over who and what she is or wants to be. For someone so deceptive, she’ll be uniquely vulnerable to truth magics, or magics that compel speaking. Though she can be deeply sincere, she’ll find it harder than ever to express her true feelings.<lj-raw>
